Why is Super Smart Considered to be Bad?

I've been to a few schools in my time and in all of those schools one message was very clear- Being smart or clever is a bad thing.

I'm not going to pretend to be really smart or anything but i have had friends that have been bullied simply because they are really good academically. They were called names like swot, geek, nerd, and any other name that springs to mind.

If a person is super smart it doesn't mean they sit at home all day doing puzzles or maths quizzes and listening to nerdy music. They can be into the same stuff as the "popular" kids but are still treated differently because they are smart. I've known clever people that are just as much fun to be around, that are just as down to earth and you can hold a decent conversation with them.

So what I want to know is when did we start being so prejudiced to people who are smarter than us and WHY do we consider being smart such a bad thing.

well i am one of the smarter and quieter people in my school. but every one teases the quiet ones and the ones that like to study and work on there school work. i am one of those people but i still have alot of really good friends and we all try to stand up for each other when some one elce is bullying us.

A lot of times it is jealousy or laziness. Some people, can admit to themselves that they are not as smart as others, and that they wish they could be. Because they feel inadaqut, they have a tendancy to lash out in ways like teasing. Others are just lazy (like me). These people have the potential to do as well academically as those who are teased, but for some reason, don't. As for myself, I am pretty smart, but I don't do my homework, so my grades only reflect my test and quiz scores, so my grades are mediocre. People tease me because I am smart and dont get the best grades.

the way my school is, is being really smart is a good thing!! we all know those are the ppl who are going to succeed!! trust me on this the only reason these ppl are making of the smart ppl is because there to dumb!!!

I agree with this. It is unfair for people to generalize about smart students. I am smart and do not like this. It downright *#!es me off.
